His Dark Materials – the extended trailer

I have to admit I am quite looking forward to the new BBC interpretation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.

The books tell an exciting story that mixes up magic and science.

Northern Lights introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Lyra’s search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In The Subtle Knife she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As Lyra learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds and leads to a thrilling conclusion in The Amber Spyglass.

I quite enjoyed the film, though it didn’t do well at the box office. Of course the end result was that they didn’t make anymore films. Maybe a TV series will be a better choice in telling the whole story.

It does seem quite similar in look and feel to the film, maybe that was intentional.

The Return of Jean Luc Picard

So we now know that next year we will see the return of Jean Luc Picard.

I enjoyed watching Star Trek: The Next Generation when it started back in 1987 and have also enjoyed the other Star Trek series. More recently I really quite enjoyed Discovery and am looking forward to series 2.

At a recent event, Patrick Stewart announced he was returning to the role of Jean Luc Picard for a new series, set twenty years after Star Trek Nemesis. We don’t know much about the series, he may be a Captain still, but probably not. No scripts have been written, but it sounds like they have written a treatment about what the show will be like.

Waiting….

Comrade Doctor

Though they have been removed from most high streets across the UK, in Glasgow you can still find Police boxes, the kind that the TARDIS disguised itself as back in 1963 when it landed in Totter’s Lane junkyard.

There is a police box at 27 Sauchiehall Street in the heart of Glasgow.

Red TARDIS

It’s red though, not blue.

Ah Comrade Doctor.

Elementary my dear Watson

I have visited Baker Street for work on a quite a few occasions for work, but on my most recent visit I was quite surprised to see Sherlock Holmes looking down on me quite close to the tube station.

Sherlock Holmes

I’ve not noticed him before, most of the time I am trying to avoid the crowds outside Madam Tussauds. Though I think a more realistic Holmes and Watson would be fun. Though a bit of a fan of Sherlock Holmes books, TV and films, I have never bothered to visit 221b Baker Street, in the main as I believe it is not a real address and is in fact a bank!

What is it with those glasses Ian?

What were you thinking Ian Hislop with those glasses?

What is it with those glasses Ian Hislop?

I am guessing that back in the 1980s that those kinds of glasses were fashionable…

Ian was a on TV programme talking about Spitting Image.
